Brown Spots

LASER TREATMENT FOR BROWN SPOTS IN MONTREAL

WHAT CAUSES BROWN SPOTS?

Brown spots and other changes to your pigmentation can be caused by sun damage and the aging process but may also be a sign of a skin disorder. Years of sun exposure with little or no protection can lead to unattractive brown spots on the face, neck, chest and hands.

The brown Spots that come with age (Age Spots or Seborrheic Keratosis) are usually flat or raised, vary in size and usually appear on the face, trunk and extremities. Most commonly found in adults over the age of 50 (but also present in younger people), these spots are normally not cancerous but can be removed for cosmetic reasons.

HOW DOES THE LASER FOR BROWN SPOTS WORK?

One of the laser technologies used by Dr. Doumit uses a powerful beam of light that shines through the outer layer of the skin. The brown pigment absorbs the light energy and gets very hot for a fraction of a second. This is enough to break up the pigment and make it less dense and disappear from the skin. Another technique used by Dr. Doumit is to use a type of laser to ablate (remove) the top layer of skin at the site of the brown spot and allow the skin to heal afterwards. This method also yields excellent result.* The treatment method chosen for each patient is personalized to the patient’s skin type and type of brown spots.

IS THE LASER FOR BROWN SPOTS RIGHT FOR ME?

If you are bothered by age spots or pigmentation caused by sun damage, in most cases, laser treatment can significantly fade or even remove these noticeable marks.*

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE LASER FOR BROWN SPOTS?

After the treatment, the treated area may appear pink, red or brown. It generally settles rapidly and is best left alone. It should not need a dressing as long as you can resist picking and scratching. In general, the healing process may take about a week.*
