Pearly penile papules (“PPP”) are common flesh-coloured and benign growths found on the rim of the tip (glans) of the penis. They occur in about 20% of the male population. Pearly penile papules are considered a normal anatomic variant. They are not due to sexual activity or lack of hygiene. They are not infectious or contagious, unlike genital warts. They are more common in men that have not been circumcised.
After an initial consultation with Dr. Doumit to confirm the diagnosis and plan the treatment, anaesthetic cream is applied. Once the skin is numb, Dr. Doumit uses a laser to remove one lesion at a time. The laser works by vaporizing the surface of the papules to the level of normal skin. Smaller papules are vapourised in an instant. Larger ones form a superficial scab which falls off in 7-10 days. This method is safe, efficacious and accurate. There is minimal (really, none) discomfort during the procedure
If you are bothered by pearly penile papules, laser treatment can significantly decrease the number of papules or even completely remove these noticeable lesions.
The healing is quick and all is back to normal about a week later. You may resume your normal life immediately, but you must abstain from sex and masturbation for about 10 days while the skin recovers completely.
