Sometimes an increase in blood pressure within our veins causes them to become twisted and increased in size. When larger, bulkier veins undergo this process, they become known as “Varicose Veins.” Smaller, thinner veins that are closer to the surface of the skin can also be affected in the same way and become known as “Spider veins.” This tends to occur in the legs and although it is not medically dangerous, these veins can still cause discomfort.
What Factors Could Influence Varicose Vein Formation?
The factors that could lead to varicose vein formation are numerous.
This includes controllable factors such as:
Or non-controllable factors including:
What Is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a treatment used to remove varicose veins found in the legs. It is typically done using a salt solution that gets injected directly into the varicose veins. The salt solution induces the blood vessel to collapse and leaves the vein unable to have blood flow through it. This forces the vessel to develop into scar tissue and become invisible to the naked eye from an external point of view.
This procedure is quick, safe, and effective with over a 90% success rate, it is rare for the veins to re-appear and if they ever do, it typically takes several years before it shows.
Is There Laser Treatment for Varicose Veins?
If the idea of an injection does not sound favourable, we do provide an alternative means of treating varicose veins through a procedure called “Endovenous Thermal Ablation.” This is a laser treatment has grown in popularity throughout the last few years and is a safe alternative to the typical sclerotherapy injection. The procedure consists of a doctor using a catheter, inserting it into the great saphenous vein. This is a long vein running throughout most of our leg and gives access to any lingering varicose veins in the legs. Laser is used to heat up the catheter inside the vein and damage it sufficiently to close off the vein, preventing blood from flowing in the vein.
